CONSTRUCTIONIST
LEARNING

Most of the City Learning
Net projects and activities
are inspired by the
constructionist learning
principles, developed in
connection with the
global Computer Clubhouse
Network for young people.
Below you will find some
papers describing
important elements in
the Computer Clubhouse
Network.

The constructionist
approach to education,
developed by MIT
professor Seymour Papert,
is based on active
knowledge construction:
it argues that people
construct new knowledge
especially well when
they are engaged in
constructing things in
the world. What’s
important is that they
are actively engaged
in creating something
meaningful to themselves
or others around them.

The City Learning Net was established in 2005 in Girona, Catalonia. It is an informal network working together in lifelong learning projects, especially projects with strong empowerment activities for disadvantaged citizens. But the network also organizes courses on many EU related topics, like project management. The network participates in many local lifelong learning activities in the partner communities. Recently the network is putting a lot of effort in taking the EU projects to a political level and exploiting strong projects in the communities. One of the network aims is to produce synergy between the European projects in the communities and to support the development of the communities into learning communities. The network resources are open to everybody. You can find the resources in the four resource sections here (role over and see...). You can contact one of the members of the coordinating team, if you wish to cooperate with the network – or know more about its activities.
Here you will find examples of projects in which the CLN partners cooperate. You can learn about the projects, if you follow the links to the project websites. On most of the websites you will find a wide range of materials, you can use freely. If you wish to know more about a project, you can contact the coordinator of the project from the project website – or you can contact one of the members of the CLN coordinating team. The network is developing new projects all the time, trying to meet the new lifelong learning challenges and trying to contribute to the Commission’s innovation and exploitation strategies.
The City Learning Net has offered courses for its partners and for educational professionals from different countries since 2006. You can access the course programs and materials here. The CLN offers to organize courses on relevant project and lifelong learning topics in you own city – or in one of the CLN cities. The courses can either be financed by the European programs or by local or regional administrations. The courses are low-cost courses focusing on learning and collaboration. They usually last from 3-5 days. You are free to be inspired by the CLN courses – and to contact the CLN for further dialogue.
The City Learning Net also produces papers on relevant subjects – papers for people doing practical project work, case studies and project concepts to be further elaborated. Here you canl find examples of such papers, cases and concepts. The network is always interested in supporting lifelong learning activities in European communities and in contributing to the development of new and strong European projects. You can find many more interesting documents and other material in the Course section and in the Project section, if you follow the direct links to their web based resources.
The CLN is an informal network and the coordinating team is just as informal as the network itself. The network is also dynamic. Partners sometimes leave the network, as they wish to work in other directions, and new partners join. Here you will find information about the people in the coordinating team, and you will find the names and websites of some of the most active partners. You are welcome to use the network to find good and reliable partners for your lifelong learning projects.
You can do this be contacting the coordinating team.
